The coast between Kemer and Olympos, protected as Beydağları Coastal National Park, is a rewarding area for birdwatching: pine forest, mountain slopes, streams, wetlands and the sea all meet within a few kilometres. A study of the birds of Phaselis and the national park recorded 199 species from 54 families, including resident birds, summer and winter visitors and passage migrants. When to go
- Spring (March–May): Northbound migration and breeding season; birds are most active and vocal.
- Autumn (September–October): Southbound migration along the coast.
- Winter: Winter visitors in a quiet season.
- Summer: Watch early in the morning; birds go quiet in the midday heat.
Tips
- Bring binoculars and a field guide or app for the eastern Mediterranean.
- Go at first light, keep your distance from nests and stay on paths.
- The area is a national park; follow park rules and take your rubbish home.
- Combine birdwatching with a walk on the Lycian Way or a visit to Phaselis or Olympos.
