Göynük Canyon, in Göynük just north of Kemer centre, is a narrow valley carved through the rock by ice-cold water flowing down from the Taurus Mountains. In summer, visitors walk through pine forest, swim in the canyon’s turquoise pools and make their way upstream through narrow passages. This guide covers how to get there, what to do, what to bring and how to stay safe.

Göynük Canyon at a glance

  • Location: Göynük, Kemer district, inland from the coast
  • From Kemer centre: About 15 minutes by car
  • Activities: Forest walk, swimming and wading in the canyon, guided canyoning
  • Season: Best from May to October; the water is cold even in midsummer
  • Entry: There is an entry fee; prices and hours vary by season

What to do

Walking and swimming

From the entrance, a path follows the stream through pine trees to the mouth of the canyon. Where the canyon begins, the water deepens and natural pools between the rocks invite you to swim. Most visitors spend a few hours here swimming and sunbathing.

Further into the canyon

The more adventurous can swim and scramble upstream into the narrow sections. The water is very cold and the rocks are slippery; if you are not confident, stay in the first pools or join a guided group.

Guided canyoning

Tour operators in Kemer run guided canyoning trips with helmets, life jackets and wetsuits. It is the safest way to see the deeper parts of the canyon.

What to bring

  • Water shoes: The rocks can be slippery and sharp; don’t go in flip-flops.
  • Swimwear and a towel: You will almost certainly get wet.
  • Dry bag: For your phone and documents.
  • Water and snacks: The path is shaded, but drink plenty in the summer heat.
  • Wetsuit: Available to rent if you plan to go deep into the canyon.

Safety tips

  • The water is cold even in midsummer; don’t stay in too long and listen to your body.
  • Do not enter the canyon in wet weather; water levels can rise quickly.
  • Always check the depth before jumping from rocks.
  • With children, stay in the shallow, calm pools near the entrance.
  • Don’t go into the deep sections alone.

When to go

In summer the canyon is a cool escape from the heat on the coast. Early mornings are quieter and cooler; in high season it gets busier in the afternoon. In spring the water can be high and very cold, so if you plan to go canyoning, ask the operator about current conditions.
