The Lycian Way, running from Fethiye to Antalya, was Turkey’s first waymarked long-distance hiking trail, and its final sections cross the mountains, plateaus and ancient cities around Kemer. If you are staying in Kemer, you don’t need to walk the whole route. With day hikes you can explore some of its finest stretches, from Olympos to Gedelme and from the slopes of Tahtalı to Göynük. This guide covers the Kemer section, the best seasons and practical hiking tips.

The Lycian Way at a glance

  • Route: Between Fethiye (Ölüdeniz) and Antalya, along the coast and mountains of the Teke Peninsula
  • Length: Well over 500 km, divided into many stages
  • Waymarking: Red-and-white paint marks and signposts
  • Kemer section: North from Çıralı and Olympos via Beycik, the slopes of Mount Tahtalı, Gedelme and Göynük
  • Best seasons: Spring (March–May) and autumn (October–November)

Stretches you can hike from Kemer

Çıralı and Olympos

The southern stretches near Kemer pass Olympos and Çıralı. You can combine a hike here with the eternal flames of Yanartaş and Çıralı beach.

The slopes of Mount Tahtalı

From Beycik village the trail climbs onto the slopes of Mount Tahtalı. This is one of the highest and toughest parts of the route, suited only to experienced, well-prepared hikers. To see the summit without the climb, take the Olympos cable car.

Gedelme and Göynük

Crossing the plateaus behind Kemer, this section passes the roughly 2,700-year-old Gedelme plane tree and a Byzantine castle, then descends towards Göynük. In summer you can finish with a swim in Göynük Canyon.

When to hike

  • Spring and autumn: Mild weather and flowering hillsides, the best hiking seasons.
  • Summer: Coastal and low sections are very hot; walk only early in the morning and on short stages.
  • Winter: Coastal sections are walkable; higher sections may have snow and rain.

Hiking tips

  • Plan your stage: Arrange transport to the start and from the finish (taxi, transfer or car) in advance.
  • Water: Some sections have no water source; carry enough.
  • Footwear: Wear hiking boots with ankle support for stony, steep paths.
  • Navigation: Waymarks can be faded; carry an offline map and GPS track.
  • Don’t hike alone: On demanding stages, walk with a friend or a guided group and tell someone your route.
  • Sun: Bring a hat, sunscreen and sunglasses.

The Lycian Way with children

The full route is not suitable for children, but short, flat stretches near the coast make a pleasant half day for families. Choose a short, shaded section with an easy way back. For more ideas, see our Kemer family holiday guide.
