The Ancient City of Phaselis: A Journey Through Time

Phaselis is a 2,700-year-old harbour city about 15 km south of Kemer, built where the pine forest meets the sea. With three harbours, a colonnaded street, a theatre and an aqueduct, it is a favourite for history lovers and for anyone who wants to swim in clear, sheltered bays. This guide covers the history of Phaselis, what to see at the site, the best places to swim and practical tips for your visit.

Phaselis at a glance

  • Location: South of Kemer near Tekirova, inside Olympos Beydağları National Park
  • From Kemer centre: About 15 km by car
  • Highlights: Three ancient harbours, main street, theatre, baths, aqueduct
  • Swimming: In the bays beside the ancient harbours
  • Entry: Archaeological site with an entry fee; check current opening hours and prices before you go

A short history

Phaselis was a wealthy trading port on the border between ancient Lycia and Pamphylia. Its three natural harbours made it an important stop on Mediterranean trade routes. Ancient sources say Alexander the Great stayed here during his campaign. The city remained important in Roman times, and many of the buildings you see today date from that period.

What to see

  • Main street: A wide street lined with ruins, linking two of the harbours.
  • Theatre: A small theatre among the pines, with Mount Tahtalı rising behind it.
  • Baths: Remains that show the social life of the city.
  • Aqueduct: The surviving arches that carried water to the city, the most photographed sight in Phaselis.
  • Harbours: The north harbour, the city harbour and the south harbour, each with a different view.

Swimming at Phaselis

What makes Phaselis special is that history and the sea are in the same place. You can swim in the bays beside the ancient harbours, in the shade of the pines. The shore is pebbly and rocky, so water shoes help. In summer, boat trips also stop here for a swim.

Visiting tips

  • Go early: Summer mornings are cooler and quieter.
  • Bring swimwear and a towel: A swim at the end of the visit is the best part.
  • Water and a hat: There is some shade, but you will walk a fair distance.
  • Respect the site: Do not climb on the ruins and take your rubbish with you.
  • September concerts: The Phaselis Festival brings free concerts to the ancient city each September.

Combine Phaselis with other trips

Phaselis is close to the Tahtalı cable car and Tekirova, so they combine easily in one day. Further south are Olympos and Çıralı and the Yanartaş flames. For more ideas, see places to visit in Kemer.
